Here is What You'll Learn
A Practical Approach to CPET Interpretation
Interpreting a CPET is about more than knowing what each variable represents. The real skill lies in bringing the data together, recognising the quality and limitations of the test, identifying the key physiological responses, and translating these findings into a meaningful performance interpretation.
This course takes a practical, case-based approach to CPET interpretation. Across three sessions, you will work through the process from assessing whether a test can be trusted, to systematically interpreting the nine-panel plot, and finally integrating the findings into a clear, performance-focused conclusion. Realistic CPET examples and guided interpretation will help you develop a structured approach that you can apply to your own practice.
The course is designed for practitioners who want to move beyond simply reading a CPET report and develop greater confidence in interpreting the data, justifying their conclusions, and understanding what the findings mean in a performance context.
21st October 2026 - Can We Trust the Test?

CASES CPD Endorsement
This course is endorsed by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (CASES) and equates to 5 learning credits. It provides structured continuing professional development for practitioners looking to strengthen their knowledge and practical interpretation of cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET), with a particular focus on performance applications.
About Gurney Performance Science Education
Gurney Performance Science Education (GPSE) delivers evidence-based education and professional development in applied sport, exercise and performance science.
GPSE is led by Dr Tom Gurney, an Exercise Physiologist and Lecturer at the University of Exeter. Tom holds a PhD in Exercise Physiology, and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), recognising his experience and contribution to teaching and learning in higher education. He also holds CMALT, a professional qualification recognising expertise in the effective use of technology in education.
Tom has extensive experience in exercise physiology, physiological testing, body composition assessment and applied sport science education, having taught across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and worked with students, practitioners, athletes and sporting organisations.
He is also an ISAK Level 3 Instructor, enabling him to deliver and assess internationally recognised anthropometric training and accreditation. Through GPSE, Tom combines his academic, scientific and teaching expertise to provide practical, professionally relevant education designed to develop skills that can be applied confidently in real-world sport, health and performance settings.
Course Capacity
To maintain a high-quality, interactive learning experience, the course is intentionally limited with capacity, with places allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Once full, additional registrations will be placed on a waiting list and contacted when the next course cohort is scheduled.
